Passaddhi is a small meditation centre in the Beara Peninsula, in the southwest of Ireland. It was built as a family home in 1996 by Marjó Oosterhoff and her husband, and since 1999 meditation retreats take place at the house. Passaddhi seeks to make the teachings of the Buddha, and in particular the meditation practices of vipassana and metta, available to as many people as possible, whether they are Buddhist or non-Buddhist.

| Passaddhi has received much support over the years from friends and fellow-meditators, in money and in kind. This has made it possible to offer retreats on a donation basis. However, with rising costs for fuel, electricity and other necessities, continued support in donations from people who value what is being offered at Passaddhi will be necessary. Any money offered wil be gratefully received, and used for the upkeep of the centre. Please contact Marjó for details of sponsorship for Passaddhi Meditation Centre. |

Volunteer opportunities at Passaddhi
Passaddhi was founded in the spirit of generosity, and is still supported by donations and voluntary work. In exchange for food and accommodation and/or retreat time, there will at times be mainly painting and gardening work available for short periods at a time. Please email or phone Marjó for details.
The surrounding countryside is extremely conducive to the silent retreats. Fuchsia hedges surround the property, which overlooks Bantry Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Passaddhi is nestled on a hillside between Hungry Hill and Sugarloaf Mountain.
There is a large garden, ideal for the walking meditation practice that is an essential part of vipassana meditation. The food offered on the retreats is vegetarian, and most of it is organically grown by Marjó’s husband in the vegetable garden. He also built the accommodation chalets: a self-contained chalet for the teacher’s use, and a bunkhouse with six bunk beds. The chalet (kuti) is also available as a place for self-retreat, or quiet time by oneself, outside retreat periods.
The practices that are offered at Passaddhi are vipassana meditation and metta (lovingkindness) meditation.
Marjó Oosterhoff is the resident teacher and manager at Passaddhi. She has practised and taught meditation (both vipassana and metta) for many years, in monasteries and meditation centres in Burma and Thailand, as well as in Buddhist retreat centres in the West. |
